A TXT record, as the abbreviation indicates, is a record, which contains info in human-readable form and not code. It may be set up for a domain or a subdomain for many different purposes. Search engines like Yahoo, for instance, have different ways of confirming that you are the owner of a given domain and one of them is in fact by creating a TXT record with certain text which they provide and that you need to use as the record value.
